Responsible Travel

Definition of sustainable tourism

Sustainable tourism is an area that will encompass many variations. We are talking about responsible tourism, solidarity tourism, ecotourism or fair tourism. These terms are often used in a rather general sense and it must be said that in recent years, it has become a bit fashionable to talk about sustainable tourism. Especially at the moment with Covid-19, everyone is thinking about traveling responsibly.

What must be remembered is that all these terms have one thing in common, which is quite simply respect for the principles of sustainable development.

Sustainable tourism is defined by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, meeting the needs of visitors, professionals, the environment and host communities”.

Sustainable tourism is totally opposed to mass tourism and it helps to reduce the negative impacts of tourism on local people and the environment and maximize the positive impacts.

Why is sustainable tourism essential?

Tourism is the world’s largest socio-economic sector. It even represents 10% of the world’s GDP and one in eleven jobs. In January 2019, UNWTO shared its statistics on tourism flows for the year 2018. In total, 1.4 billion tourists were recorded. A significant growth in the space of a few years which is not without consequences. Indeed, tourism, if left unchecked, can have a destructive impact on the environmental, social and economic ecosystem of a particular region.
Today, tourism plays a vital role around the world. It is therefore vital to inform, raise awareness and advise travellers on the challenges of travelling while respecting local economic development and the preservation of socio-cultural and natural resources.
